Building New Council Homes

Changes in housing law have given Wealden District Council the opportunity to provide new Council homes.

These changes, which came about as a result of the Localism Act (2011),  allow the Council to keep the rental income from Council Housing and invest it in new homes for local people.

To date, we have built 93 new homes in Hailsham, Willingdon, Crowborough, Forest Row, East Dean, Cross in Hand and Polegate.  We have purchased a further 57 homes across five new build sites as well as 19 existing properties. A 67 bed retirement living court has also been completed in Uckfield.

Of the 235 new Council homes that have been provided since 2011, 229 are rented properties and the remaining 6 are shared ownership homes (part rent/part buy).

We are currently working on a further 6 new Council homes in Hailsham, which will be finished in 2021. We are in the process of buying 5 more existing properties and have a number of other schemes in the early stages of development.
