Welcome to Retirement Living

Security, economy and convenience; when choosing a home for your retirement, these are probably your main priorities. But you do not want to give up your independence. Many retired people find that their present home no longer suits their needs. So you may be considering a move to a more compact and easily run home.

Erosh logoWealden District Council is now an Erosh (Emerging Role Of Sheltered Housing) Code of Practice accredited organisation. This followed three days of independent assessment of the Council’s Retirement Living Service, which was awarded the maximum accreditation of ‘outstanding’. The Erosh Code of Practice enables service providers, such as the Council, to demonstrate the quality of their sheltered accommodation and services against nationally recognised standards. Wealden Retirement Living – Service Description

The purpose of Wealden Retirement Living is to provide residents with housing that includes on-site housing support, to enable them to live independently and in their own home for as long as possible.

In all Wealden Council owned and managed retirement living properties there is a 24-hour Lifeline link and a secure door entry system, as well as a court management service. The Court Manager is able to provide non-personal care and housing-related support.  Residents requiring personal care or domestic support will need to either pay for this themselves, receive such assistance from family/friends, or be assessed by East Sussex County Council Adult Social Care for eligibility for assistance.

Applicants with care needs beyond the ability to be safely accommodated, or who exceed 14/15 hours of care per week, will be referred to East Sussex County Council for assessment for extra care housing or alternative appropriate housing.

Retirement living can be accessed by Wealden residents aged 60+. We can accept applications for people below this age if, for example, they have a physical disability and have been assessed as requiring both housing and support. Applicants for Wealden Retirement Living must be able to live independently with low/medium support.

Retirement Living is located across the district, in flats and a very a small number of bungalows. Each Wealden Retirement Living complex has a range of different facilities and most can offer:

  • a lounge for social events
  • art and crafts room and/or a library area
  • hairdressing
  • guest room
  • laundry room with modern washing machines and driers; and
  • communal gardens

How to apply to buy leasehold

To apply for leasehold retirement living you must meet our eligibility criteria: 

  • Must be aged over 60 or have a physical disability.
  • Must be capable of living independently – ‘Independent Living’ means living in a purpose built development, that on a daily basis you are capable of maintaining the property; managing your own financial affairs, day-to-day living needs and are sufficiently mobile to live independently within the property and can evacuate the building unassisted in the event of a fire, ale to use communal areas and joining in the activities and events on offer without assistance. We may seek confirmation of your medical status from your GP or ask that you meet with our Housing Solutions Officer as part of our standard application process.
  • Must be in a financial position to afford to buy and also to pay for the running cost of a retirement living home. We will ask for details of your income and expenditure on the Application Form.
  • If you have a property to sell in order to finance the purchase of your new home we will ask for proof that the property is currently on the market for sale or a purchaser has been found.

To apply to rent retirement living you must meet our eligibility criteria:

  • Must be aged over 60 or have a physical disability.
