The Council has been successful in securing a total of £352,657 from the Fund which is administered by Sport England. So far more than £100 million has been made available nationally to support local leisure facilities.

‘’An initial grant was awarded earlier in the year to Freedom Leisure who manage the four leisure centres on behalf of the Council,’’ said Councillor Philip Lunn, Cabinet member for Community & Public Health. “This second payment will help aid their recovery particularly when current social distancing restrictions are coming to an end.”

“Physical activity is vital to our wellbeing, whatever our age. Leisure centres play an important role in keeping our communities healthy and happy. They also contribute to the wider Wealden economy.

“These past months have been tough for Freedom Leisure and its staff.  This money will ensure its indoor and outdoor fitness and wellbeing programmes can recover over the summer months and return to levels experienced before the pandemic.’’

The second payment of £217,342 follows on from the earlier payment of £135,314 made in March.

Huge impact of pandemic

Ivan Horsfall Turner, Managing Director of Freedom Leisure said;

“The pandemic has had a huge impact on most businesses. Freedom Leisure as a charitable, not-for-profit leisure trust is no exception. Without the support of not only the National Leisure Relief Fund but our local authority partners, there was a distinct threat to the long-term future of leisure centres in the UK.

“With the necessary funding available, and the excellent partnership working with Wealden District Council, we are now in a position to move forward and continue to provide high quality leisure facilities for the whole community in Wealden.”

Freedom Leisure runs four leisure centres on behalf of Wealden District Council at Crowborough, Uckfield, Hailsham and Heathfield. This money will further help to deliver many activities such as swimming and specialist services such as the GP referral programme that are not widely accessible in the private sector.
