Have your say about the new Wealden Local Plan

Publish Date: 6 January 2021

There is still time to have your say about how you would like to see the new Local Plan for Wealden develop. You have until midnight on Monday 18 January to take part.

The Direction of Travel consultation will help plan for how we respond to the challenges of climate change, the national need for more homes and ways in which we can protect and enhance our environment. It is also an opportunity to look beyond the current social and economic disruption caused by Covid-19 to map out a more sustainable future.

“Our new Local Plan will be the key document which we will use to assess planning applications over the next 15-20 years,” said Councillor Ann Newton, Wealden Cabinet member for Planning & Development.

“It is vital to hear the views of residents, businesses, voluntary organisations and town and parish councils at this early stage. This will help us to  understand what is important to our communities, and plan accordingly.”

“It will be an opportunity to look ahead at new or improved infrastructure we would like to see. And find out more about the sort of Wealden where you would like to live, work and spend your leisure time.”

Themes covered by the consultation

There are a number of themes outlined in the Local Plan Direction of Travel Consultation, on which we are seeking people’s opinions. They include:

  • Tackling climate change, achieving carbon zero outputs and improving air quality
  • Delivering the right type of homes, in the right location and to a high standard to meet local need
  • Regenerating towns and local centres by attracting the new investment and creating vibrant places
  • Improving the quality of our green and blue spaces, as well as enhancing our natural environment and increase biodiversity
  • Using good design to create high quality places which take account of local character

The consultation takes the form of a series of questions, as well as opportunities to include your own suggestions.

You can comment on just one of the themes or questions, or on all. The responses will then be used to formulate a Draft Local Plan, which will go out for consultation in the spring of 2022.  The process will take account of any national changes in planning policy which are introduced during the process.  We hope to hear as many views as possible before the Direction of Travel consultation closes at midnight on 18 January. You can find out more about the consultation on the Wealden website, and take part using our Consultation Portal.
