Publish Date: 16 September 2022

Construction of 15 new affordable homes for rent in Heathfield is progressing well – and the development has been named Cart Barn Place.

Wealden District Council’s Housing Development Team is behind the development on Burwash Road in conjunction with local contractor Trinity Homes Ltd, and the name has been chosen following consultation with Heathfield Parish Council.

The original building on the site – Cart Barn – was a timber-framed late 18th century barn. The barn had been altered substantially over the last century, significantly diminishing its aesthetic value and historic significance.

A planning application to build houses on the site was originally approved in 2015 and construction began last year.

The new design retains the barn link with the use of traditional local materials, vertically hung clay tiling, and use of red and orange multi stock bricks.

To complement the surroundings, high quality landscaping is being provided and as many existing hedgerows and tree lines are being retained as possible, plus additional planting. A natural pond area with wildflower planting and a log pile will be provided to encourage wildlife.

The development will be a mix of two and three bedroom detached and semi-detached houses and one and two bedroom flats. The homes will be available for applicants on the council’s Housing Register from autumn 2023.

Councillor Ray Cade, Wealden council’s portfolio holder for Housing, said, “It is wonderful to see so much progress being made at the Cart Barn site and to know that when finished, the new development will provide much needed affordable family orientated homes to rent in Wealden.”
