National Dementia Action Week is an annual event organised by the Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness of dementia and sees the UK public taking action to support people with dementia and their carers. The week runs from 13 to 19 May.

Each year the Alzheimer’s Society works with individuals and organisations across the UK to encourage people to act on dementia.

To help raise awareness in Wealden, members of the Wealden Dementia Action Alliance (WDAA), supported by Wealden District Council, have issued a booklet listing activities and events held in towns and villages throughout Wealden and the surrounding areas. The booklet also includes details of support and services available to residents available all year round.

The booklet has been produced by Wealden council and is sponsored by Care UK. Copies are available at several community venues across the district such as libraries and community centres, as well as the council offices.

The Wealden Dementia Action Alliance was set up in May 2016 to help make the district more dementia friendly and raise the awareness amongst residents and businesses.

Councillor Kelvin Williams, Alliance for Wealden (Liberal Democrat) and lead councillor for Public Health, Wellbeing, and Asset Management said, “The booklet gives residents information about activities which are happening throughout May as part of the National Dementia Action Week, 2024. It has been carefully crafted to appeal to people with dementia and their carers, to bring joy to people’s lives by making friends and meeting up with existing friends or family.

“There is a range of activities including singing workshops, memory cafes, activity sessions, community cafes and supper clubs that are open to everyone.”
