Wealden’s Local Plan consultation launches in February

Publish Date: 15 January 2026

Wealden District Council’s Cabinet recommended yesterday that a Draft Local Plan for the district should go ahead for public consultation in February.

The local plan is a statutory document that the council is required to prepare, which details what development can go where in the district over at least a 15-year plan period to 2042.

The consultation exercise gives local people the chance to give their views on the proposals. The consultations will be running from mid-February and will last for six weeks with ten in person exhibitions – the dates of these will be released soon and will be published on the website at wealden.gov.uk and on the council’s social media channels.

If adopted, the Local Plan will provide a vision for the Wealden district. It will set out strategic and non-strategic planning policies to guide development and locations the council proposes for new homes, jobs and infrastructure to help meet the district’s needs.

Councillor Ian Tysh, Alliance for Wealden (Green Party), and lead councillor for Planning and Environment, said, “Through this new Local Plan, Wealden takes every opportunity to protect habitats and green spaces, planning for greater numbers of smaller properties, improving space standards, and requiring new development to contribute to net zero targets.

“The consultations will be running for all residents, businesses and communities in Wealden to give their views on the future of the district. An up-to-date Local Plan will give us much more control and certainty over where development can, and cannot, take place”

The decision to go ahead with the Local Plan consultations will be ratified at the next Full Council meeting on 29 January.
