Wealden is the largest district in East Sussex, covering 322 square miles, and is home to some 160,175 people. Half the population live in the five market towns of Crowborough, Hailsham, Heathfield, Polegate and Uckfield.
Wealden shares its boundaries with six neighbouring local authorities stretching from just south of Tunbridge Wells (Kent) in the north to the boundary with Eastbourne in the south – a distance of some 30 miles.
Wealden had 8,510 businesses in 2018. Small and micro businesses form a fundamental part of the Wealden economy with 91.3% of businesses in Wealden employing less than nine people (Source: ONS Inter Departmental Business Register 2018).
The Public Administration, Education and Health sector is the largest (2017) employing 22.6% of the workforce, followed by the Wholesale and Retail trade sector which employs 17% of the workforce (Source: ONS Business Register and Employment Survey 2017).
The Core Strategy Local Plan sets out how and where the District will grow over the period to 2027. It allocates a number of key Strategic Development Areas for employment and housing growth providing for a total of some 38,000 sq metres of allocated employment land and 16,900 sq metres of retail growth.
Individual sites allocated for employment growth can be found in the principal market towns of Crowborough, Hailsham, Polegate and Uckfield.
