Wealden District Council is delighted to announce the successful completion of 20 new affordable homes on the former Council owned Streatfeild House site. Previously a difficult to let retirement living scheme made up predominantly of bedsits, the new homes are provided as a mixture of Social Rent and Shared Ownership and are built to carbon zero ready standards. These highly sustainable homes are helping to meet the high need for local low-cost housing.
The homes were completed in March 2025 and are now fully occupied with the new residents joining Wealden District councillors, Uckfield Town Council officials and the local MP along with council officers to celebrate at the official opening event.
There are a mix of one-bedroom flats and two, three and four-bedroom houses. Two of the houses are fully wheel-chair adapted properties which include facilities such as through-floor lifts, level access showers and kitchen counters that can be lowered meaning that wheelchair users can users enjoy a much improved standard of living. The remainder of the homes are built to accessible and adaptable standards to ensure that future mobility needs can be accommodated should they be needed.
To ensure the homes are truly affordable, the rents have been set at social rent levels – approximately 40 to 50 percent of market rents – and the homes have been allocated to applicants on the Council’s housing register.
All homes are built to the highest energy efficient standards, achieving an EPC A rating (the highest) with high levels of insulation and the inclusion of air source heat pumps to run underfloor heating. The homes are also provided with ventilation systems, triple glazing and photovoltaic solar panels. This will see a reduction in energy use and cost for the occupier. Each home has an electric vehicle charging point and the woodland area has been retained to provide a continued habitat for wildlife. Bat and bird boxes, bee bricks, bee friendly planting and hedgehog gateways are also provided within the site.
The completion of these homes contributes to the Councils commitment towards achieving carbon zero for its housing stock by ensuring the design meets that target from day one of occupation.
The project has been funded in partnership with HM Government through the Brownfield Land Release Fund (BLRF2) and Homes England.
The Council worked with local contractor, Trinity Homes Ltd and the project was finished on time and within budget and we are very pleased that families have moved in and are enjoying their new homes.
