Bird flu update – East Sussex
Publish Date: 5 November 2025
People who keep birds in East Sussex are being alerted to a mandatory housing order for poultry and other kept birds that’s in effect from Thursday, November 6, across England due to increasing cases of bird flu locally and nationwide.
The order means bird keepers must house all poultry and captive birds if they keep more than 50 (except in specific circumstances e.g. some zoo birds) or if they sell or give eggs away.
Keepers of poultry or other captive birds at any premises in England and Wales are required to register with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). Registering helps prevent the spread of disease and protect all captive birds, including back yard flocks. please be aware that if you do not register breaking the law if you don’t register.
In addition, all bird keepers are required to undertake enhanced biosecurity measures to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks of the disease. Keepers should familiarise themselves with the steps they need to take to prevent bird flu and stop it spreading and remain vigilant for signs of disease and report it to keep your birds safe.
