Climate and Nature Network brings together local organisations for climate resilience workshop

The S.A.F.E.R. (Stronger Adaptation for Environmental Resilience an initiative for locally-led climate adaptation) workshop was delivered in partnership by Community Action East Sussex, the Wealden Food Partnership, and Wealden District Council’s Climate Change Team.

The workshop was attended by 43 participants, who explored practical ways to strengthen local networks, identify opportunities for collaboration, and develop approaches that can help communities respond positively to climate and environmental challenges. Attendees were encouraged to share knowledge, discuss local priorities and consider how collective action can support stronger, more resilient communities across the district.

The workshop looked at the strategies local areas should adopt to become more resilient in the face of climate change. Overwhelmingly participants said that the most important factors were local people coming together, acting collectively, making small changes in their own communities. They identified a wealth of resources already available to help with this including existing community groups, parish councils, and the energy and creativity of people in Wealden. It also provided a valuable opportunity for attendees to connect with others working across the district, share experiences, and consider how collective action can help create healthier, more resilient and sustainable neighbourhoods.

Speaking after the event, Melanie Nock, Community Action’s Development Worker for Wealden and a co-convener of the Climate Change Network said, “It was very exciting to see participants actively pooling resources and linking up with each other to develop projects. And it was also very humbling to see the passion and commitment in the room. This network has a very important role to play in protecting the natural Wealden its residents care so much about.”

Councillor Paul Coleshill, Alliance for Wealden (Liberal Democrat) and lead councillor for Climate Change, said, “The Climate and Nature Network is an important initiative that helps organisations, councils and community groups across the district join forces to tackle climate change and protect nature. With Wealden surrounded by National Landscapes and protected habitats, working together is essential to safeguard these for future generations.

“We want nature to thrive across the district, and by sharing knowledge, building partnerships and working towards common goals, we can achieve far more together. These sessions continue to be both inspiring and informative, showcasing the passion and commitment that exists within our local communities.”
