Subject to Parliamentary approval, the government has announced a modified version of the One East Sussex proposal. This will see East Saltdean, Peacehaven and Telscombe become part of Brighton & Hove City Council, with the remainder of East Sussex forming a single unitary authority.

Elections for the new council are expected in May 2027 with the authority coming into being in April 2028.

East Sussex councils raised concerns about the proposed boundary changes during the government’s consultation, stating the unnecessary complexity and cost for unclear gains.

Over the coming months, councils across East Sussex will work together to develop the new authority, while continuing to deliver services and support local communities. Engagement with residents, businesses, town and parish councils, and community organisations will remain an important part of shaping future arrangements.

Councillor Rachel Millward, leader of Wealden District Council, said, “The government has now made its decision and our priority is to work constructively with partners across East Sussex to help create a strong and effective new council for the future.”

“Throughout this transition, our focus will remain on ensuring residents continue to receive the services they rely upon, while making sure the needs and voices of Wealden’s communities are represented as plans for the new authority develop.”
