Car Parking Fines and Enforcement

Wealden car parks offer free parking, for the period of time stated, apart from Alfriston and Pevensey which are run by the Parish Council, and have a seasonal pay and display charge system.

Car parking enforcement carried out by the Council is done so in accordance with the  Off Street Parking Order 2015  made under the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984.

We are responsible for enforcement in the car parks that are owned, maintained and managed by the Council, along with some privately owned car parks.  You can view the car parks owned and/or managed by the Council in our Car Park Directory.

We do not cover on-street parking (public highway) or other private car parks.

An Excess Charge Notice (ECN) is issued when a breach of the Parking Order has taken place.

Excess Charge Notice Issue

An Excess Charge Notice (ECN) may be issued when a vehicle is:

  • Not parked wholly within a parking bay
  • Not of the permitted class (disabled, adult and child or type) of the parking bay
  • Left longer than the permitted maximum time
  • Returned to the same car park within 3 hours

At Wealden Car Parks where charging applies, we may issue an ECN where:

  • No parking ticket (timed payment receipt) is displayed
  • The parking ticket is not valid

Wealden Parking Fine Costs and Penalty

The Excess Charge Notice (ECN) fine is £60.  This will be reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days.   If payment is received after 14 days, the fine will remain at £60.

The Road Traffic Regulation 1984, Section 35 (A) makes it an offence to fail to pay this excess charge.
