Council responds to Government decision to pursue extension of Crowborough Army Training Camp use

Publish Date: 26 June 2026

Wealden District Council is deeply disappointed by the Government’s decision to pursue the extension of the use of Crowborough Army Training Camp and remains clear that large-scale accommodation sites are not the right approach for either local residents or those seeking asylum.

The council has consistently raised concerns about the way decisions are communicated by the Home Office. A lack of timely information, meaningful early engagement and transparency is unacceptable and continues to make it harder for local communities and partners to plan for and manage the impact of these decisions.

The council has fully explored its legal options regarding the use of the Army Training Camp. However, following detailed advice from leading King’s Counsel that there is no viable legal route likely to succeed, the council has taken the decision not to pursue further action. This position was set out in a press release issued on 3 March 2026, which explained the reasons in full. This reflects a responsible use of taxpayers’ money, avoiding the cost of legal action with no realistic prospect of success.

While the site has operated relatively well to date, this is largely due to the dedication of local volunteers and partner organisations supporting those on site, rather than a coordinated or adequately supported national approach.

If the site is to remain in use, the Home Office must provide significantly greater support and resources to the voluntary sector, alongside appropriate investment in the local community to help mitigate impacts and support residents.

The council will continue to focus its efforts on supporting local communities, working closely with partners to maintain the safety and wellbeing of residents, share clear and factual information, and manage local pressures. At the same time, it will continue to press the Home Office to take a more coordinated and transparent approach, and to take meaningful steps to reduce the impact on the local area.
