Litter

Our responsibilities

We are responsible for removing litter such as cigarette butts, crisp packets, drinks cans etc from public places such as highways, lay-byes, bus shelters, subways, council car and coach parks and recycling bring sites.

We also work in partnership with businesses to help resolve ongoing litter problems in specific areas.

Areas we don’t cover

We are not responsible for removing litter from motorways, trunk roads and private land (this is the landowner’s responsibility).

Reporting a problem

You can help keep Wealden tidy by reporting general litter problems in your area here.

What happens next?

Once a litter problem is reported, we will carry out an inspection and arrange for the area to be cleaned if necessary.

Fines & prosecution

It is a criminal offence to drop litter or throw it from a vehicle. We can issue Fixed Penalty Notices to anyone caught littering provided we have sufficient evidence of the offence. If you witness litter being discarded please report it to us at street.scene@wealden.gov.uk ensuring you provide any details of the vehicle involved and a description of the perpetrator.

What can you do to help?

You can help keep Wealden tidy by:

  • Always using litter bins when you’re out and about and encourage children to use them.
  • If you cannot find a litter bin, please take your rubbish home with you.
  • Do not put your household rubbish in street litter bins or next to litter bins, please place your rubbish in your own waste bins for collection.
