The responsibility for sewers is generally Southern Water. If you need further advice, please contact them on 0330 303 0368
Public drains on the highway are the responsibility of East Sussex County Council.
The Environment Agency is responsible for rivers, but we can require a landowner to clear a blocked watercourse.
Cesspits and septic tanks are the responsibility of the properties deriving a benefit, but we can offer advice or investigate problems.
You can find information about cesspit or septic tank emptying services here.
If a neighbour’s cesspit or septic tank is causing you a problem we recommend speaking to them first before you report it.
If this is not successful or where individuals are not approachable, think about writing to them and if this does not work, then why not try contacting a free mediation service who can assist you in communicating with your neighbour. Please note that mediation is voluntary and both parties need to engage in order to come to a mutual agreement. We recommend phoning them on 01323 442 781 to discuss their services before you report the problem to us.
You can also take your own action through the magistrate’s court.
Please use the reporting form to see what we can help with and for advice on who else can help. Please note, anonymous complaints cannot be processed.
